Saranda - Introduction

Saranda is an unspoilt world, where nature rules supreme. It is the home of endangered flying lizard. In the local language Saranda means "the land of seven hundred hills" and it is located in the West Singhbhum district. It is full of color full flora and fauna. It is famous for its Sal forests and its majestic elephants are known all over the world. 
In the North West of the State and the other in the rich natural forests of "Saranda " in the southern most part of the state. Incidentally, the "Singhbhum Elephant Reserve " is the only elephant reserve in the country, which exists in this forest. The traditional routes of the elephants exist since times immemorial. But off late they are trying out new routes. In the process two group of elephant herds, one comprising of about 125 elephants and another of 25 elephants have been isolated from the Saranda forest and are trying to relocate themselves in the jungles of higher latitudes of the state i.e. in Hazaribagh district of the state. The group of 25 elephants has as high as 5 calves showing the stress this herd is going through. These are the herds, which are causing maximum man elephant conflict.

Mahadev Sal : The famous temple of Mahadev Sal (Lord Shiva) is located in Goelkera deep inside the forest. The Mumbai-howrah railway line passes through this place. A very beautiful temple of Indo-Aryan architectural style have been built here, which later famed as Mahadev Sal. In the month of Shravan every year a large number of tourists visit this place from every nook of the country to worship Lord Shiva. In the month of Shravan every Passenger and Express train stops at this place.

Temple pf Maa Giri Rajeshwari : The temple of Maa Giri Rajeshwari is located about 10kms from Kiriburu in Saranda. It is a very famous temple built in the Indo-Aryan architectural style. A large number of devotees visit this place especially during Navaratra when the site witnesses special festivity.

Kulbonga Mahadeo : Kulbonga Mahadev is located about 15 kms from Manoharpur in Saranda. Actually it is very big Shiva Linga in the village Kulbonga and for this reason it is famed as Kulbonga Mahadev. A large number of devotees visits this place to worship Lord Shiva. A special fair is organised here during Shivaratri.

Excursions : Tholkobad - It is famous for a beautiful rest house that was built in 1905-06.
Ligirda Swamp - It is a narrow natural Marshy land.
Loyall's view - it is a wonderful place to see hills and hillocks of Saranda.

How to Reach : Journey of Saranda begins at Chaibasa, which is 140 kms from Ranchi and 60 kms from Jamshedpur. A 80 kms drive through Jhinkpani and Barajamda takes one to Baraiburu, the gateway to Saranda.
