The Goodwood Park Hotel,
a Preferred Heritage Hotel was designated a National Monument in
1989. Built in 1900, the Hotel housed the largest foreign colony
in Singapore - The German Teutonia Club. The Hotel's historical
heritage was faithfully restored to revive its timeless European
charm and classic elegance when the 19 th century Tower Wing was
renovated in June 1977, at an estimated cost of S$3.5million.
Housed in the
Tower Wing, the 260sqm Brunei Suite is described as 'one of the
most beautiful (suites) East of the Suez'. The suite comprises a
spacious lounge, leather-panelled study, luxurious bedroom with
walk-in closets, bathroom with sauna, pantry and a grand dining
room with its own rooftop garden, all serviced by a private
lift.
Celebrities
that have resided in the Brunei Suite include Anna Pavlova, who
performed for two nights at the Goodwood Hall in 1922, American
legend John Wayne, Boxer Mohammed Ali, Acker Bilk, Frankie
Avalon, Sir Cliff Richard, Shirley Bassey, Shirley MacLaine,
Eartha Kitt, Kitaro, Cilla Black, and many others. Hong Kong
movie stars Jackie Chan and Chow Yun Fatt and most recently,
famous Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli. Dignitaries included
British Prime Minister Edward Heath and Queen Beatrix of The
Netherlands.
The Manasseh
Brothers, three wealthy Jewish brothers bought the Clubhouse in
1918, together with five surrounding houses and renamed it
Goodwood Hall, after the famous 'Goodwood' racecourse in
England. It was used as a function room cum Restaurant and
Entertainment Palace.
In 1929, the
Goodwood Hall was converted into a hotel and named Goodwood Park
Hotel. Then the Second World War broke out. In 1942, the
luxurious Hotel became a plush headquarters for the Japanese
Imperial Army. After the war in 1945, the Hotel was returned to
the Manasseh Brothers.
In September
1947, the Hotel was incorporated as a public-listed company. Mr
Vivian Bath bought it for St$600,000 and became the sole owner.
He turned the premises into a residential hotel. In 1963, the
Hotel was bought over by the Malayan Banking Group for
M4.8million. However, in 1968, the Hotel was bought by the late
Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat.
The Hotel
entered the listings of 'The 300 Best Hotels in the World' in
1978. This was published by Harpers and Queens U.K.
