With a living history of more than 5,000 years
old, Ulpotha is in the oldest continuously inhabited region in Sri
Lanka. It is also believed that it was a sacred place during those
early times.
Ulpotha, which means 'water spring' is the former manor house
owned by chieftains ruling 29 villages. It was originally built a
few hundred years ago and is now restored to its former design.
Ulpotha is neither a hotel nor a holiday destination; it is a
place of total peace for those seeking a haven for a peaceful
retreat.
Ulpotha and the near Embogama Village are funded by the East Pole
Foundation, a loosely knit, non-profit group whose primary aim is
to nurture the values of traditional village life.
Visitors of Ulpotha are fortunate to experience exceptional beauty
of nature, history, and people and at the same time help in
sustaining the community in restoring bio-diverse organic farming
and reforestation of lands and immediate surroundings.
