Batang
Kinabatangan
is Sabah’s longest river and the forest here boasts an
astonishing variety of wildlife that is both common and easy to see.
Beaufort-Tenom Railway
Sabah’s only railway system takes visitors on a winding mountainous,
jungle track that affords spectacular views and can be lots of fun. A good
choice in any weather
Caves
These are plentiful throughout the area and many of the mountains and
islands are riddled with these ‘explorer paradises’. Only two though,
Gomantong and Madai, are administered by the Malaysian Government and are
officially open to the general public other than Paka Caveswhich climbers
come across when ascending Mt. Kinabalu The rest are protected due to the
wildlife, such as the rare Sumatran (plated) Rhino and the Orang-utan that
inhabit the same areas where the caves are found.
Diving
For the true diving enthusiast, the island of Sipadan, located
on the east coast of Sabah is renowned and is a must if you are in this
part of the world. It is unique in that the island rises, sheer from the
ocean floor some 700 m and mushrooms out near the surface, creating an
underwater haven for fish and other marine life beneath its surrounding
waters. Another excellent dive spot lying further offshore is that of
Layang Layang Atoll located in the South China Sea which is well known not
only for the spectacular marine life but also as a nesting spot for
thousands of migratory birds.
Gunung Trus Madi
is
Sabah’s second highest mountain, rising 3,684 metres above sea level on
the eastern side of the plain. It's a much more demanding climb than Mt.
Kinabalu.
Islands
Volcanic eruptions created the islands that lie off the coast of Sabah.
Some are included in the list of National Parks in the area, where turtles
come to breed or lay their eggs and the Snorkeling and diving in the
surrounding waters is generally excellent. A number of these do have
accommodation so that the visitor can real get a ‘feel’ for the area
Mt
Kinabalu This incredibly high granite peak simply begs to be
climbed and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the
province. Surrounded by beautiful rainforests and having gentle jungle
trails, it is easy to negotiate by both the young at heart and those of a
slower pace.
