Location

Ash-Sharqiyah Sands (also known as Wahiba Sands after the Wahibi Bedouin tribe hailing from this region) offers the intrepid visitor the romance of the desert with the thrill of adventure sports. A "perfect specimen of a sand sea", the Wahiba Sands, is a small isolated 12,000 sq km desert lying about 190kms from Muscat.

The great Wahiba sands are longitudinal dunes 200 km long and 100 km wide running south from the Eastern Hajars meeting the Arabian Sea south of Ras Al Hadd. The Sands comprise a great variety of dune formations 100-150 metres high and varying from deep red to a rich honey colour, representing stages of its evolution over millions of years. The sand dunes are moving inland at about 10 meters each year.

The Sharqiyah (Wahiba) Sands are home to large populations of migratory Bedouins. In fact, historical evidence of human occupation in the Sands dates as far back as 8000 years in the form of stone tools.

The animal life includes a large and varied migrant bird population along the mudflats bordering the Bar al Hikman. The Sands also form a natural refuge for many animals, such as gazelle, Ruppel's fox, the sand cat and white-tailed mongoose.

Facilities

Just 20 kms from the road, amongst the golden red dunes of Al Sharqiyah, the Al Raha Tourism Camp beckons with true Arabian hospitality.

The resort has 77 ‘barasti’ style huts with attached bathrooms in addition to the 9 ‘barasti’ suites all decorated in traditional Bedouin style.

The camp has a huge main majlis that can accommodate 200 people. 3 private majlises provide the perfect setting for private parties for groups of upto 20 people.

From lavish BBQ dinners in the 200 seater main dining hall or traditional Bedouin food served in the private majlises to a romantic candle light dinner for two under the stars, the Camp caters to your every mood and every whim.

While Breakfast is Continental, Arabic and Indian, the Chefs are happy to oblige any special requests.

The Camp even has its in-house dune. At 130m high, 200m wide and with a 60 degree slope, the Al Raha Dune is really steep, really long and really scary.

Conference Facilities

The Al Raha Tourism Camp boasts a 100 seater Conference Room with inbuilt acoustics and PA system - a perfect backdrop for corporate presentations, conferences or training sessions amid rugged desert surroundings which will help boost the creativity of your employees and strengthen team spirit while uncovering personal leadership abilities and help in training through role playing opportunities.

Adventure

Other places might offer a luxurious living experience. Al Raha offers a rare insight into the lives of the local people and their culture. That’s why the camp arranges visits to Bedouin houses, lets you pitch your own tents amongst the dunes or cross the desert on camel back. In fact Al Raha takes pride in satisfying your every whim.

There is the story of a Japanese tourist who wanted to go into the dunes at night. Without a second thought, Ali (the proprietor of Al Raha) drove out with her and she spent a half hour gazing up at the sky from the top of a massive dune. Back in the camp, people were discussing hotels and resorts and their star ratings and she said, “Ali, I give Al Raha a Thousand Stars in rating as this place has all the stars in the world.”

All it takes is one day at Al Raha and even the most timid will understand the addiction of these radical sports!
