Alleppey is quite well connected by trains to different cities. A journey by train from
Cochin passes through some fo the most beautiful backwaters and country sides in Kerala.
Road: An excellent road network links the district to all-major towns
and cities in India. Trivandrum and Cochin are connected by one of the best roads in
India.
Ferry Services: Kottayam (02:30 hrs); Changanasseri (03.00) hrs,
Kollam (08.00 hrs); Kumarakom (02:00 hrs) by special boat.
Suggested Access to Alleppy:
From Cochin: You can go in a taxi, which will be charging around Rs.
500/- to Rs. 600/- for drop.
From Trivandrum: You can go by Trivandrum-Cochin bus and get down at
Alleppy. .
From Bangalore: You can go by Bangalore-Trivandrum buses and get down
at Alleppy. The ticket cost is Rs. 300/- The journey is overnight via
Salem-Coimbatore-Cochin. The roads are good and the buses are very comfortable being
airbuses but non A/c but video coach. The some of the good operators are Shama Transport
& others.
From Kollam: If you are coming from Kollam, an interesting alternative
would be by boat which starts from teh Kollam boat jetty (near KSRTC bus stand) at 10.30
am and reaching Alleppey at 6.00 pm (the ticket charges is Rs. 150/-). The trip through
the backwaters is slow but an interesting experience.
Caution for Traveling by Road in Kerala: There are not private buses
available in Kerala for interior parts to move around. Hence you plan to go from Alleppy
Munnar (Distance 150 Km/90 mile) by road, you have to arrange for ambassador taxi
for 4 persons which charges Rs. 4/- per km (Fixed by Government) with Rs. 150 daily
charges. Hence for Alleppy-Munnar you have pay for 300 km/180 mile considering the return
journey.
