North Sikkim plays a vital role in
Sikkim tourism. It is called as the flower valley, replete with 500
waterfalls, hot springs, glaciers, and the majestic snow covered
Himalayas. All
these make North Sikkim a heaven in earth. A typical North Sikkim
tour starts from Gangtok then via Kabi Lungtsok 23 km, Phodong 40
km, Mangan 67 km, Singhik 72 km, Chungthang 98 km, Lachung 117 km to
141 km away flower valley Yumthang. On the way lies Singhba
Rhododendron Sanctuary and Kanchandzonga National Park. SNT buses
from Gangtok leaves at 8-00 and 13-00 hr and reaches Mangan via
Phodong and going still 5 km further to Singhik. Chungthang-bound
mail bus leaves at 8-00, Lachung-bound army-bus at 9-00, but they
are not regular in services. Upto Tung bridge via Mangan-Shinghik
Indians are free to move, but beyond north of Tung RAP (Restricted
Area Permit) is required.
Yumthang, at an
elevation of 11,800 ft. & 140 kms from Gangtok, is a paradise
for nature lovers with a fascinating blend of flora & fauna and
breathtaking scenic grandeur. Yumthang, is a vast expanse of
colorful grass-carpet to the horizon Covered with rhododendron
shrubs and trees, the entire valley erupts into a riot of colors in
May. A little ahead on the right crossing the Chu over the
wooden bridge is Sachu or hot spring. It contains sulphur-water. It
is immensely popular for its curative and healing power. In
May-June 33 varieties of rhododendrons work unitedly with alpine
flowers paint and help flourish & colour Yumthang. Yaks grazing
over snow white Himalayas and breathe in the fragrance of flowers
from a distance. For the Yumthang tour, March-June, Sept-Dec
(beginning) is the ideal season. Yak and Yeti Travels organize
'Alpine Package Tour' for 2 nights and 3 days and also for 7 nights
and 8 days. As the China Border is nearby the whole area is
sensitive and under military control. Foreigners are required to get
RAP to visit the area. Taking snaps are prohibited. You should
deposit your camera at a military check post 1 km away from Lachung
on the way to Yumthang.
