North Sikkim - Introduction
 

The north district perhaps the most beautiful part of Sikkim. With its natural and Alpine scenery North Sikkim offers a sense of paradice.

 Kabi Longstok
On the route from Gangtok to Yumthang visit Kabi Longstok where the Sikkimese history began. Tibetan Chieftain Khey-Bumser and Lepcha Shaman Te-kung-tek signed a treaty of brotherhood in the 13th. century.

Phensong Monastery
In the slope of the Phodong is the Phensong Monastery set amidst beautiful landscapes.

Phodong Monastery
One of the six mejor monasteries in Sikkim is Phodong Monastery ,built in the first quarter of the eighteenth century.

Labrang Monastery
A kilometer further from Phodong, the Labrang Monastery was built about a 100 years later.Labrang means "the dwelling place of lamas".

Tumlong Palace
Between the two monasteries are the Tumlong Palace which was the third capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim.

Mangan
The North region's Headquarters at Mangan which has now become somewhat of a gateway to unexplored North.

 

 

Singik
A small village with a majestic view of Himalaya. One can enjoy the amazing surrounding view of Mount Khangchendzonga from here.

Chungthang
About 95 kms away from Gangtok enroute to Yumthang lies the tiny hamlet of Chungthang at the confluence of the two rivers,the Lachen Chhu (Which later evolves into Teesta) and Lachung Chhu. This is also a sacred place blessed by Guru Rimpoche.

Lachung
It is an idyllic valley surrounded by mist-shrouded mountains and great water falls. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary Located in Lachung is noted for its abundance of Rhododendron tree.

East Wind Holiday provides accomodation in Lachung in "Lachung Tourist Centre", a wooden two storied gust-house with warm, most comfrtable accomodation in Lachung.

Yumthang
The most famous spot of the area is definitely Yumthang, 141 kms from Gangtok, located in a flat vally whose sides reachup to the towering mountains.Yaks grazing on flower-carpeted meadows is a common here. Yumthang, the Valley of Flowers is a naturalist's paradise in Spring. Wild Flowers, primulae and rhododendron bathe the landscape in rich clours.

Yume-Samdong
Situated at a height of 15,300 ft. 26 kms from Yumthang is very near to China border. This place is well known for its hot springs. Here are 14 sulpher hot springs.

Katao
24 kms from Lachung at a height of 15,000 ft.(approximately). Katao is a very beautiful place with the panoromic view of snow capped peaks of Himalaya. This place is very close to China border.

Lachen
At a height of 9900 ft. Lachen is a very beautifull valley. For tourist this is the base for journey to Chopta Valley.

Chopta Valley
The beautiful valley of Chopta is situated at a height of 14,500 ft. is also known for its flower. This is the second valley of flowers in North Sikkim. The entire valley erupts into riot of colors in Spring.

Gurudongmar Lake
This lake is situated at a height of 17,156 ft. with a exotic view of lake surrounded with mountains, snow-peaks. Here situated the 2nd. highest motor drivable road after Kharlang Pass in Lahey.

Chho-Lha-mo
4 kms from Gurudongmar Lake Chho-Lha-mo is another high altitude lake with the landscapic view of China occupied Tibet. This lake also enjoys different level of importancy as the river Tista originates from here.
