This
city is a good base for exploring the region. It is offering its own
sights as well as many excursion options, and a stay of three or four
days gives a good introduction. If you have more time, overnight
visits to Mae Hong Sorn or Golden Triangle are well worthwhile.
With an international airport providing flights to Bangkok and other
provinces as well as to other countries, It is Northern Thailand's
transportation center.
In planning your trip, keep in mind that it connects with many other
cities outside of Thailand.
There are 3 domestic airlines from there to Bangkok and other
provinces Thailand and 6 international airlines from there to many
countries.
This is a region of great natural wealth and scenic beauty. It
embraces eight provinces bordered by Burma to the west, and Laos and
the Mekhong river to the north. It is different from other regions of
the country. It has a topography, culture and an ethnic make-up of its
own.
Getting there is now much easier than in the days of travel by boat or
elephant. Thai Airways has several flights to the northern cities of
Thailand.
