Around Pokhara Valley
The areas around the city offer some excellent hiking
opportunities, with the valley on one side and snow-capped mountains
on other, indeed a paradise for nature lovers.
Sarangkot
:The most
famous short route of all, the place overlooks the valley and an
excellent place to view the mountains on the north. Just a couple
of hours walk from the heart of the town, Sarangkot also has
places to stay and eat.
Lakes:Beside the
Phewa Lake, few kilometers away from the city, lies the Rupa and
Begnas Lakes, a place to visit for the ones yearning to get away
from the crowds.
Phewa Lake:The second largest lake in the
country, Phewa is the focal point of Pokhara and extremely popular with
visitors. You can go sailing on the lake, row a hired boat across the
water, fish or visit the island temple in the middle. The eastern shore
is popularly known as Lakeside or Baidam, and serves as a home base
for travellers. Most of the town's hotels, restaurants, and handicraft
shops are located here.
Barahi Temple:The Barahi Temple is arguably
the most important shrine in Pokhara and a major landmark. Built bang in
the centre of the Phewa Lake, this multistoried pagoda is dedicated to the
boar manifestation of Goddess Ajima, the protector deity representing the
female force Shakti.
Seti Gandaki:This sparkling river
flows right through the city and is completely underground at places.
Amazingly enough, it seems no more than two metres wide at certain points
though its depth is over 20m. A small bridge, dubbed Mahendra Pul,
provides a perfect view of the river's dreadful rush and the deep gorge
made by its powerful flow.
Davis Fall:Davis Fall lies about 2km
southwest of Pokhara airport on the Siddhartha highway. Locally known as
the Patale Chhango (Hell's Fall), it was named Davis Fall after a trekker
who mysteriously disappeared down an underground passage beneath the
fall.
Begnas & Rupa Lakes.
These two other aquamarine
lakes are ideal for boating, fishing, angling, sunbathing and
picnics.
Roberts's Aviary at The Fulbari. Acquired from the
late Colonel Jimmy Roberts, this aviary houses many rare Nepalese
Himalayan pheasants collected by him.
Green Canyon & Seti
Gorge from The Fulbari. This duo is also the vantage point for viewers
at The Fulbari Resort & Spa. From the top of the steep Green Canyon,
one is open to the gorgeous views of the Seti Gorge while the northern
panorama opens up to the 140-kilometer span of the Annapurna Range in the
middle, Langtang Lirung in the extreme east to Dhaulagiri to the farthest
west.
Mahendra Cave. One of the few caves in Nepal with
stalagmites and stalactites, this grotto needs further exploration as it
may reveal more than the present galleries.
Temples &
Monasteries. Bindyabasini and Barahi are the most popular Hindu
temples in Pokhara. Another Hindu shrine is the Bhadrakali Temple situated
on a small and beautiful hill in pleasant sylvan surroundings. The
Buddhist Monastery on top of a forested hill in Malepani overlooks the
Pokhara Valley.
World Peace Stupa. An artistic structure, it
is built on top of a hill on the southern shore of Phewa Lake, and offers
the views of the mountains and Pokhara City.
Trekking:Pokhara serves as the starting
and/or finishing point for some of the most popular treks including the
Annapurna Circuit and the Jomsom Trek. It also offers a number of short
treks for those who cannot manage long and challenging ones. The most
popular among them is the one to Sarangkot (1,592m), a former Kaski fort
lying atop a hill 5km west of the old bazaar.
Day Hikes:All the nearby hills of Pokhara are ideal for excursions. The most
important are
Sarangkot. A focal point for the grand views
of the Annapurna Range, Sarangkot overlooks the Valley of Pokhara.
Kahun Danda. Another enchanting hill destination east of
the Pokhara City, it takes three hours to reach it from Mahendra Pul (Mahendra Bridge) of Pokhara Bazaar.
Phoksing Danda. A ridge
south of Pokhara, this scenic hill provides excellent views of the entire
Pokhara Valley and the snow peaks of Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas, Manaslu,
Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal and other summits.
