Chatuchak Weekend Market
Known in Thai as Talat Jatujak, this is the Disneyland of Thai markets; on weekends 8672 vendor stalls cater to an estimated 200,000 visitors a day. Everything is sold here, from live chickens and snakes to opium pipes and herbal remedies. Thai clothing such as the phaakhamaa ('sarong' for males) and the phaasin ('sarong' for females), kaang keng jiin (Chinese pants) and seua maw hawm (blue cotton farmer's shirt) are good buys. You'll also find musical instruments, hill-tribe crafts, religious amulets, antiques, flowers, clothes imported from India and Nepal, camping gear and military surplus.

The best bargains of all are household goods like pots and pans, dishes, drinking glasses etc. If you're moving to Thailand for an extended period, this is the place to pick up stuff for your kitchen. Don't forget to try out your bargaining skills.

There is plenty of interesting and tasty food for sale if you're feeling hungry, and live music in the early evening. And if you need some cash, a couple of banks have ATMs and foreign-exchange booths at the Chatuchak Park offices, near the northern end of the market's sois 1, 2 and 3. Plan to spend a full day, as there's plenty to see and do.

The main part of the Weekend Market is open from around 8am to 6pm on weekends, though some places may stay open as late as 8pm. There are a few vendors out on weekday mornings and a daily vegetables / plants / flowers market opposite the market's south side. One section of the latter, known as the Aw Taw Kaw Market, sells organically grown (no chemical sprays or fertilisers) fruits and vegetables.

The Weekend Market lies at the southern end of Chatuchak Park, off Th Phahonyothin and south of the Northern bus terminal. Air-con bus No 2, 3, 9, 10 or 13, and a dozen other ordinary city buses (including No 3 from Th Phra Athit in Banglamphu), all pass the market - just get off before the Northern bus terminal. Air-con bus No 12 and ordinary bus No 77 conveniently terminate right next to the market. The Sky-train runs direct to Mo Chit Skytrain station, which stands almost in front of the market.

Nailert (Nai Loet) Market
This market complex, opposite the Amari Watergate Hotel, is a good alternative to Chatuchak Weekend Market for residents or visitors located near the city centre. The array of goods for sale is similar and the foodstalls, especially those serving Thai seafood, are particularly good
