Calizz”
- "The Heart of Goa"
When I was a child I was
always fascinated by the stories of the past told by my parents and teachers. I
always use to imagine that one day I would make a time machine to go back in
time to experience the life of people of the past and their way of living. As I
grew older my fascination faded with time but the curiosity to spend a day in
the history remained somewhere in my heart
So began my journey of
exploration to find the places of historical importance all over India. When I
visited Goa I never thought that my childhood dream would become a reality and I
would discover something which would enrich my vision of history such as my
visit to “Calizz” has.
The Houses at The Calizz.
Even before the Portuguese arrived in Goa the society here was
sophisticated organized and had a sense of order we have to go back in history
in the pre Portuguese Goa to understand what houses were like before Goa was
colonized and show how the things drastically changed
In the presence of advances and withdrawals, Indo Portuguese civil architecture
was based fundamentally on the interconnection and reciprocal social intercourse
between the two architectural models; the local Hindu model. Contrary to what
happened in Africa and in Brazil, the Portuguese were confronted in Goa with an
ancient culture involving a social structure which was strongly hierarchical, as
well as customs defined by extremely strict rules. If conversion to Catholicism
brought a new set of behavioral patterns, the persistence of the caste system in
the local population perpetuated many of the social codes, especially those
relating to domestic life. Within this interconnection; whilst Portuguese
architecture acquired a position in relation to the structure the design of the
façade, the Hindu architectural controlled the interiors, displaying a strong
resistance to the Portuguese spatial styles.
Historical
Collaction
The collection of artifacts and antiques at Calizz is one of the finest in
the world. The amazing numbers of artifacts cross the limitation of chronology,
region and style and they fall into a category of their own. The collection in
the Portuguese era reflects the most beautiful objects of Indo Portuguese art
both civil and religious, from furniture to inlaid ornamentation.
Goan traditional artistes have indeed
carved a niche for themselves with a number of handicrafts that have
been known by the connoisseurs from different parts of the world. They
are infact a mirror of Goa’s perennial glory and beauty. The blend of
Indian and Portuguese culture is amply reflected in the arts and crafts
fashioned by the Goan artisans. These creations have captured the
fancies of local traditions and tourists as well the marketing of
handicraft items depends on the continuing inflow of tourists in Goa.
The Collection at Calizz can be broadly
classified under the following categories:
-
Furniture
-
Glassware

Collection of Lost Plants
When the
creation of Goa was completed with rivers mountains, and the seas had created
the beaches and the coastal plains of Goa, the land began to green tentatively
first, then with increasing confidence. Plants drifted in fro other parts of the
world carried in by the winds. Green Goa is still the haven for plants. And as
the rocks and beaches speak of Goa’s past, the plants and the trees of Goa speak
of the time that followed.
At Calizz naturally
created “Garden of Lost Plants” shows you the different
medicinal herbs, Plants and Trees which are available all over Goa but probably
people don’t look hard enough to search for them.
