The project is designed,
constructed and executed by Mrs. Annie George & Mr. George J. Thaliyath to
promote the traditional art forms of South India, especially of Kerala.It was a
Herculean task with 60 Skilled carpenters and restorers, over a period of 7
years. The whole structure is made out of Laterate stone, Wood and Clay Tiles
which is all natural materials. All the Architectural objects in the theatre
belongs to 19th century or even before. The objects in the museum are mostly
from 15th to 20th century and some are of very early period dates back to 2000
years
The structure and premises
is completely Plastic Free, Rain Harvesting systems is adopted for the water
requirement.All the wood used in the structure is either antique nature or used
wood of the last century.There is not even a single tree being cut for the
construction of the structure. All efforts and workmanship in this structure is
completely handmade. We were using only traditional practices for the
construction, the whole structure is laid out of wooden and terracotta flooring.
The Architectural objects in the structure and different art objects in
the museum are a part of the private collection of the couple. This was a
painstaking procedure to collect every art objects for the last 20 years, for
the promotional activity of our traditional art. One of the main objective was
to protect the traditional art elements within our country as well as to
preserve the forgotten art forms and culture from extinction.
Another objective of this
institution is to promote the different artist for a descent livelihood and to
provide a respected stage and highly educated viewers alike.The whole effort was
made not out of much money but out of the painstaking effort and sacrifice for
the cause of breathing art and culture throughout their life for the promotion
of traditional art.
Kerala Folklore Theatre
At the Kerala Folklore Theatre and
Museum we are doing something which is a rare experience for the amateur art
lover. A session which lasts over three hours is kept apart for the educational
part of our aim. Here a student can spend three hours or more with a master of
a particular art form. Here is an interactive session in which the learner can
have a direct contact with the master. This session includes the history,
background, origin, place of origin, the periodic changes, the present situation
of the particular art form etc are taught to the listener. If it is Kathakali
or Mohiniyattom the hand symbols (Mudras) and the face expressions (Bhavas) are
explained. This is a unique endeavour of Kerala Folklore Theatre And Museum aims
at spreading the culture that was Kerala and the Art that was ours of the long
foregone period. This is an experience which one cannot get at any folklore
places. We welcome you to this unique experience
The two theatres Kanjadalam and
Kalithattu are examples of the perfection that is enviable. The ambience of an
old temple stage coupled with modern facilities can be a modest description of
these artistic miracles. Various Classical art forms, Folk art forms and ritual
art forms are performed here by the living Masters of these Arts. There is a
unique programme for the art lovers who want to learn more about these art
forms. A Day With The Master is an interactive session where the performing
Master gives detailed information about the art form.
All the performances in the theatre are done
with the experienced masters of each Traditional Theatre.There is a facility for
demonstrations by the masters and cultural interaction & classes from the
experts of each art forms. The theatre concept is very unique and of course the
best traditional theatre in India. The rich ambience in the theatre takes the
viewer back to the 18th century rich architectural. A variety of Mural Paintings
are set in the theatre representing all kinds of traditional art forms of
Kerala.The Kanjadalam Theatre is really the best architectural marvel of the
traditional theatre of India.
