Vishalla',
the traditionally designed restaurant, came into being on the 27 nth of
March 1978. The designer of the place, Mr. Surrender Patel, discovered
the name ‘Vishalla' in a book – ‘Bhattachintamani' of a religious group
called ‘Swaminarayan'. This book covers the life span of the
Swaminarayan Guru. There is a small district in Himalayas - ‘Badri
Vishala'; which is observed as a prominent solace for the ‘rishi-munis'
since time unknown. The place is fit for the purpose owing to the
vastness in the ambience and immense relaxation it offers. ‘Vishala'
found its way into the Swaminarayan book due to the mention of the
instance when the Swami goes to meditate there. The name caught the
sensitive eyes of Mr. Patel as it related to his vision of the
restaurant – a place to have home-like food in a relaxed atmosphere and
free mind.
Vishala's portrayal like a typical Indian village finds its traces from
the childhood memories of the designer. He could never find the same
free, relaxed, natural tone in any city that he had experienced during
his school vacation days spent in village. As a designer, he always
thought of ways to bring urban crowd closer to nature, and give them
also the blessed experience of feeling free. He put his ideas onto solid
grounds through Vishala's layout and decorum, which is now making us all
proud through its rich culture.
ABOUT THE
RESTAURANT
Talking of restaurant
gives us a picture of a brightly lit, air-conditioned hall, with music
playing in the background, and waiters waiting on us to jot down our
choice from the menu. Can you imagine a place where there are no close
rooms or halls, lanterns instead of heavy lights, natural air replacing
the air-conditioning, folk songs sung with no mike, muddy lanes,
home-like food served on a leaf, and everything around resembling a
typical Indian village! Another distinguishing characteristic of the
place is that you decide the menu, and pay the bill at the reception
itself. This is so, since deciding menu before setting onto having food
consumes relaxation time. Paying the bill early, frees the mind from
bill. Well, if you haven't heard of any such place, come home to the
restaurant - Vishala.
Vishala is not only
designed like a village; but you also feel the warm hospitality of the
staff members like village-folks. As soon as you set your foot in the
area, you can let your worries go. The atmosphere is created to be close
to nature that relaxes the mind. There are no doors seen in the premises
signifying its emphasis on freedom of mind. The waiters as well as other
staff are dressed in the traditional Indian way; with a turban or ‘topi'
on head and ‘Dhoti-Kurta'. The interior design is certainly one of its
kinds, proudly symbolizing Indian culture.
FOOD
When every ounce of
Vishala speaks of a village-like atmosphere, how can the food and
serving be any different! It certainly maintains the consistency of a
village. Do not look around for a wash basin to wash your hands. There
is a turban man standing to pour water on your hands. Like a village
seating arrangement for food, you are seated on the mud floor with a low
height wood log table in front of you. The best way is to sit in a
cross-legged posture. It is understood from Ayurveda that in such a
posture, hernia is pressed. While eating, you feel that your stomach is
filled, but actually some space is still left. This keeps the stomach
tension-free.
You are given a plate made of leaf, and like a royal guest you are
offered delicious food-items in a row. Needless to say, the food is a
sample of typical Indian platter. This is sometimes misinterpreted as
‘Gujarati Thali', but it is not the same as it contains no fried items
like its counterpart. The diet is planned to be less in fat with roasted
or baked items, lots of green as well as sprouted salad, ‘chach', etc.
etc. The food is unlimited, so you eat to your heart's content and go
home filled up to the brim.
ENVIRONMENT
Vishala, true to its
meaning, gives the feeling of vastness with its open area. There are no
physical barriers in the form of doors or walls. The natural touch with
plants and muddy lanes itself frees the mind from all day to day
concerns. The overall village-like environment is pronounced in every
nook and corner of Vishala. There are lanterns to lit the place, the
area is mud-plastered, and even the entertainment section uses no
additional sound system. The impact is emphasized with the staff dressed
in traditional Indian style. Not to forget that not only exterior
dressing is done in village style, but they also exhibit the heart-felt
hospitality of village folks!
The city people are deprived of the natural blessings that are a part of
a village. The designer strives to give the city folks a taste of the
village through his restaurant – Vishala. The experience is relaxing and
very much welcome to the stressed mind owing to a total change from
man-made environment.
ENTERTAINMENT
Eating out at restaurants
or food –joints is a part of urban life style. What do you worry most
when you are planning to go to any restaurant, particularly on a
weekend? Waiting time, right? Yes, it really takes the toll out of
anyone who has to wait to get a free table. Vishala takes care of your
concerns, and offers you a wonderful entertainment section in the
premises. Though, the reason for waiting is essentially due to the food
being prepared fresh that takes approximately 25-30 min. Not to worry.
Move to the entertainment area, which is an open ground with some
‘charpais' to sit and relax while watching the shows. There are
‘bhajans' being sung without using any artificial sound enhancing
system, folk dance – garba being played by traditionally dressed
dancers, puppet shows, and magic shows; all form the entertainment
offerings.
The stress again is on giving a
village-like environment to the city folks that will relax their mind.
You feel the entertainment soothing, and it surely keeps you engaged
till you know that your food is ready.
OUR MUSEUM
Vishalla adds to its pride
of presenting typical Indian culture through its village-like
environment with its old utensils museum named as ‘Vechaar'. The museum
found its way into Vishalla periphery three years after ‘Vishalla' was
started, that is, on the 27th of April 1981. ‘Vechaar' is one of its
kinds in the world of museum as this is the only museum in the world
portraying such precious collection of utensils. The designer of
Vishalla, Mr. Patel shares his success on the establishment of ‘Vechaar'
with Mr. Jyontindra Jain, a well known Anthropologist. Mr. Jain fully
supported and guided the cause, and eventually helped in setting up the
museum itself. His passion for the cause was so deep that his good work
did not stop at that; he himself wrote catalogues for the museum.
A walk around the hut-like museum makes one's heart skip a beat watching
at the irrevocable beauty of the utensils. These utensils have been
through the changing seasons and times over years. They speak of the
unmatchable art-genius of man kind during the old days when they did not
have the modern facilities of our times. The designer could not let our
rich heritage pass away with these vessels being lost under the
smoldering fire! He was determined to preserve them, and today his dream
is a reality in the form of Vechaar. Museum will be closed on
Monday.
