History of Vadodara :
Vadodara owes its identity and its stature to a Maratha clan - The
Gaekwads - who were originally the generals of the Peshwas in
Maharashtra. They established their stronghold in the city and
introduced several social reforms in education, medicine, religious
tolerance and administration which made Vadodara a thriving commercial
city with virtually no strife or people unrest. The turning point in the
history of the city came when Maharajah Sayajirao Gaekwad ascended the
throne in the late 19th century. He along with his chief minister Diwan
Madhav Rao transformed Vadodara into a place of impressive and artistic
palaces and also built up a vast and priceless collection of art from
around the world. In fact, till today legends abound about the fabulous
wealth of the Gaekwad family and their priceless jewellery and works of
art.
