Sightseeing Highlights

The most important temple and main highlight in Somnath is the Kailash temple with its imposing architecture, a 50-meter high tower, intricate carvings and a number of holy idols and images.

You must make a visit to the museum as well, which contains many artifacts and historical objects depicting the history and culture of this temple town and the Junagarh Gate, which was the entrance to this region before it was destroyed. The gate is well known for its architectural magnificence.

The Bhalka Tirth is another major tourist spot, which is situated at the confluence of three rivers and is considered a holy place. It is believed that this is the place where Lord Krishna was wounded before his death.

Some of the other places of attraction include the Ahilyabai temple and the Jama Masjid.

Other Activities

The other activities here include a leisure visit to the Somnath Beach with its many attractions including camel and pony rides; a visit to Gir National Park which is situated about 43 km off Somnath and is the only home of the Asiatic lion; and a trip to Veraval, which is known for its culture and history, as well as shopping.

Located in the state of Gujarat, on the Arabian Sea, Somnath is one of the holiest pilgrimage spots for Hindus and home to one of the 12 Jyotirlings or religious Shiva shrines of India. It has had a long and eventful history and been built and destroyed a number of times down the centuries. Somnath had always been the target of invaders in search of its fabulous treasures and richness. The ancient inscriptions and carvings found here reveal that the place was initially inhabited by the Aryans. Somnath is also known by several other names including Deo Pattan, Prabhas Pattan or Pattan Somnath.
