Location
Nako is a important centre of Buddhism. There are at
least seven temples of different periods distributed all over the
village, including a monastic complex on its western edge. Boasting four
temples and a number of additional buildings , this complex preserves
the earliest artistic heritage. The austere and unornamental exteriors
of the buildings give little hint of the important artistic and
religious legacy that lies within its walls. The monastery of Nako with
murals dating back to the 11th century, is one of the most important
repositories of the ancient tradition of painting in India. The dukhang
or prayer hall of the monastry has a Vairocana shrine, in keeping with
the monasteries associated with Rinchen Zangpo. For the trekking
enthusiasts, this is the base for the trek to the Reo-Purgyal peak and
is en route to the Tashigang, Somang and other monastries.
