Festivals

  • Janmashtami - The most awaited day for the devotees at ISKCON is celebrated every year in the month of August – September to mark the appearance day of Sri Krishna. He comes to this world to attract the conditioned living entities back to their constitutional position of eternal bliss and knowledge. The jubilant affair makes for a culturally vibrant and spiritually uplifting festival. The presiding deities Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi are dressed with lavish clothes and gorgeous floral arrangements. The whole temple is bedecked with lights and flowers for the pleasure of the Fountainhead of all pleasure – The Supreme Personality of Godhead – Sri Krishna. At midnight the Lord is bathed with scented waters, milk, clarified butter, curd and various fruit juices creating frenzy amongst onlookers. Bhoga offering of 108 food items to the Lord is the special attraction for the day.

  • Gaura Purnima - This festival, which occurs in March or April, celebrates the appearance of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Gaura Purnima means "Golden Full Moon", signifying that Lord Caitanya took birth at the time of the full moonrise and also that the Lord, being extremely merciful, would benedict everyone with the soothing moonlike rays of His sublime teachings. Readings from Caitanya Caritamrita and Kirtans bring alive the dormant Krishna Consciousness in the hearts of people who visit the temple to take blessings from the most munificent – Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Their Lordships are given maha-abhisheka amidst ecstatic kirtans and dancing devotees. Following this the Lord is offered delicious food preparations of over 100 types. • Rama Navmi - This day marks the appearance of Lord Sri Ramacandra – the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the inauguration of Sri Sri Radha Parthsarathi Mandir, ISKCON East of Kailash. Lord Ramacandra – the heroic warrior who saved his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of evil Ravana with the help of Hanumana and brother Lakshmana is worshipped the whole day by offering them a shower of milk, honey, Clarified Butter and Juices of selected fruits. The temple is beautifully decorated with flowers and resonates with the chanting of vedic hymns.

This millions of devotees pull the huge wooden carts built to carry the three deities Lord Jagannath, Baladeva and Lady Subhadra. Srila A.C.
