Located inside the East Fort, this temple dedicated
to Lord Vishnu, is a blend of the Kerala and Dravidian styles of
architecture. One among the 108 sacred Vishnu temples in India, the
presiding deity here is Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha, the Serpent.
The idol, plated in gold and made out of a rare composition known as
katu-sarkara-yogam, is acclaimed as a marvel. It is also noted for its
mural paintings and stone carvings. Only Hindus are allowed inside the
temple

clothing; Women - Saree or full skirt and blouse; Handbags, mobile

Cheraman Juma Masjid, Kodungalloor
Located 2 km from Kodungalloor town,
this mosque resembles a Hindu temple in appearance. Built in AD 629,
this is the first mosque in India and the second in the world where Juma
prayers were started. Other places of interest nearby include
Cheramanparambu, the ancient Thiruvanchikulam Temple, the Bhagavathi
Temple and the Portuguese fort
St. Thomas Memorial, Kodungalloor
St. Thomas is believed to have landed
in Kodungalloor (formerly called Muziris) in 52 AD. The St. Thomas
Church established by the apostle houses holy relics from the olden days
Parasurama Temple, Thiruvallam
(7 km from Thiruvananthapuram) This
2000-year-old temple on the banks of the River Karamana, is the only one
in Kerala dedicated to Sree Parasurama, the mythological creator of the
State. This temple is a venue for ancestor worship. As part of the
bali ritual, devotees make offerings to the souls of the departed,
after taking a dip in the holy water. Ph: 2380706.
Kayyoor, Bharananganam
An enchanting landscape formed by a
chain of green hills at the Bharananganam panchayat. A shrine dedicated
to the Pandava brothers of the epic Mahabharatha is found here. As in
the famous temple at Sabarimala, only ghee is used to light the lamps
here. Women are not permitted inside the temple
