Adventure, natural beauty and caring for
the environment – how often does one get an opportunity to help their
environment when they go on holiday? With Himalayan Homestays, you
can. Here’s a concept that wraps travel, tourism and ecological
development in to one attractive and out-of-the-world experience.
Homestays offer you a unique opportunity to stay with and share the
culture of the Ladakhi people in remote villages, while trekking
through the rugged habitat of the endangered snow leopard. By staying
with the locals of Ladakh, you help them generate income from tourism
activities
in their region.
Getting to Leh :
Most major airlines operate regular
flights to Leh from Delhi, Jammu or Srinagar. The Delhi-Leh flight is
just an hour long. If you prefer train travel, the closest railhead is
Jammu, which is also well-connected to all other cities in India. By
road, Leh is accessible from Srinagar between June and November and
the Manali-Leh road from June to October. Note that you should ideally
register yourself at Drass on the Srinagar-Leh road or at Upshi along
the Manali-Leh highway if you do choose to travel by road.
When to Visit :
The best time to visit Ladakh is from
June until September, the region’s summer season. At this time, Ladakh
is an unparalleled paradise, with clear, stunning views and warm and
sunny weather – the average temperature range during the day is about
20–30°C. Keen trekkers usually head to Ladakh during July and August,
when the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways are open to vehicles.
That said, Ladakh is a land bound by two of the world’s highest
mountain ranges – the Himalayas and Karakoram – anyone visiting Ladakh,
even in the middle of summer, should be prepared for the sharp drop in
temperatures at night.
