At Agraharam
Cottages picnic,
pilgrimage and history intertwine.
The beauty of the green landscape, crystalline streams, mist-clad mountains and
the silent atmosphere are some of the “luxuries” that you get at Thirunelli
Agraharam Cottages. You can eat the most declicious food from its multi-cuisine
restaurant, looking at the ravishing beauty of hills and dales. Indeed it is a
rendezvous with nature, an excellent miniature of Kerala, the God’s own country.
Here, the cottages are situated inside the forest, but only 85 mts from the main
road that bifurcates the thick forest. The above 85 mts look like a canopy. The
resort area is fully protected by barbed wire fencing and power fencing. The
Naalukettu restaurant and some of the cottages are facing the reserve forest.
The drive to the resort from Kattikulam town (Kerala) or Kutta town (Karnataka)
is also through the forest which takes less than an hour. Also important tourist
attractions like Kuruva Island, Tholpetty Forest, Pakshipathalam Mount, Irippu
Waterfall and Kalindi River are nearby.
The resort is very near to Thirunelli Temple which has been a witness to
thousands of years of history and a solace to thousands of pilgrims in prayers.
The belief is that if you make a visit to Thirunelli temple you will get the
same benefit of a pilgrimage made to Kashi. Therefore it is called Thenkashi
which means Southern Kashi.
The Papanasini River (extinguisher of sins) is on the western side of the
temple. The belief is that if we immerse here the ashes of the dead, they get
the same benefit that they get at Gaya.
Thirunelli is an inseparable part in the writing of history of Wayanad and
Kerala. There are two copper plate inscriptions, pertaining to the temple, which
date back to 10th century. The stone aqueduct that reaches the temple is also
hundreds of years old. Thirunelli has also been made famous by the old Malayalam
travelogues “Unniyachi Charitham” and "Kokila Sandesham" (Message through
Cuckoo).
In short, Agraharam Cottages and Thirunelli, collectively rejuvenate your body,
enliven your soul and enrich your knowledge.
