Hilda
and Justin lived and worked for 30 years in London, but always knew they’d
return to their roots. Wild Palms is their retirement dream – a large, rather
grand townhouse in a leafy suburb of Trivandrum, ten minutes from the sea. More
formal than a homestay (there’s 24-hour room service and cable TV), the house is
an eclectic mix of 'designer’ and 'ethnic’. The elegant dining room chair was
poached from a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design, the beds are traditional
Keralan. The house is modern, and indulges a miscellany of architectural
fancies. The central atrium has an almost church-like resonance, wide marble
spaces, a sweeping wooden staircase and leaded windows. Downstairs, an
ornamental fountain tinkles in the hallway; upstairs, bedrooms have more space
than you need and the suite has a balcony over the garden. The atmosphere is
relaxed, you come and go as you please and eat with the family around an expanse
of dining table. The restaurants of Kerala’s capital Trivandrum, where ancient
meets bustling modern, is a ten-minute walk away.
