Veligandu Island Resort Maldives
[Male] [Reservation]
Veligandu Island Resort Maldives Outer View Veligandu is a haven of invaluable comfort and pleasure. There are a few places - even in the Maldives - that can compare to the island’s natural beauty. Encircled by beautiful beaches of fine powdery sand and a huge sandbank of 80 meters on one end, Veligandu is a haven of peace and tranquility, the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

The designs of the resort’s architecture, right down to the final touches, are authentically Maldivian. Apart from the thatched roof and the fine white sand on the floor, Veligandu offers real Maldivian charm, a high standard of services, friendly and experienced staff; it has an extra-ordinary elegance that is almost beyond compare. This is the real Maldives.

Location

Veligandu is situated in Rasdhoo Atoll in North Ari Atoll, some 50 kms from Male’ International Airport. A short scenic flight of 20 minutes that will carry you over some of the beautiful Maldivian islands and reefs, will take you to the landing platform right at the edge of the famous sand bank at Veligandu.

Accommodation

The resort offers four choices of accommodation: secluded Deluxe Water villas, Water Villas, Deluxe Beach Bungalows and Beach Bungalows. Although different in size, design and the location, all rooms offer comfortable accommodation and are air-conditioned with ceiling fan, and equipped with IDD telephone, mini-bar and en suite bathroom with hot and cold water, showers and shaver points. Deluxe Beach bungalows and Beach Bungalows are furnished with a third bed, making it especially convenient for a family with a child to accommodate.

  • Beach Bungalows The Beach Bungalows are located facing the beach - in fact they are no more than a few metres away from it. The individual bungalows are tastefully designed and furnished. All Beach Bungalows offer an excellent view of the lagoon and the ocean beyond. Even inside, the glass doors afford an excellent view of the sea. The floor of the verandah outside the room is of fine white sand and comfortable white deck chairs afford a place to lie back and watch the ocean. The floors are tiled, and the tropical prints and colours of the drapery accent the white ceilings and walls. A choice of lighting enables you to choose how bright or soft you want the ambience to be. The rooms are furnished with bed, closet, dressing table and mirror and a writing table and chair. All beach bungalows have a third bed, but here you may choose a twin room or a double room when you make your reservation. The bathrooms are spacious and are partially open air with shower, WC and washbasin.

  • Deluxe Beach Bungalows The deluxe Beach Bungalows offer spacious accommodation. Accessible from the land, but the semi-circular sundeck to the front juts out onto the shallow lagoon. These sundecks are furnished with comfortable sun loungers and offer total privacy - no one to overlook you - while you sunbathe or spend an afternoon reading. The view is of a clear peaceful turquoise lagoon that gives way to the dark blue ocean that merges with the sky at the horizon. Step from the sundeck into the clear blue waters of the lagoon. The scene is of perfect tranquility.

The room is conveniently furnished with comfortable rattan chairs and a glass top coffee table. All rooms have double beds and a third bed. The rattan furniture is elegant and comfortable, and includes a wardrobe, a writing desk and dressing table with mirror. A well-stocked mini bar & Tea / Coffee making facilities adds to your convenience. The fully fitted bathroom is partly open air in true Maldivian tradition, with bathtub, shower and washbasin.

  • Water Villas Walk under the continuous arch formed by the trees on either side of the main walkway, right to the northern end of the island. A long wooden jetty leads you to these exclusive rooms, secluded from the rest of the island. Each room an individual bungalow, is as beautiful inside as they are from the outside. Step inside the bungalow from the jetty, into the living area, furnished with closet, a set of drawers for your belongings, coffee making facilities and a mini safe.

Step into the lavishly furnished bedroom, with pine interiors, furnished with a comfortable queen sized bed, with glass-topped round bedside tables, writing table with chair and a seating area with comfortable cushioned seating, and glass-topped coffee table. The tiffany style lampshades add to the ambience inside.

Full glass doors open out to a private terrace, furnished with cushioned sun loungers, and a wooden table with chairs. Steps from the terrace lead down on to a private sundeck. Feel like a swim? Step down into the lagoon from the sundeck.

The fully fitted, spacious en suite bathroom is equipped with WC, bidet, bathtub, a separate shower, and hair dryer. Shutters on the full glass window, next to the bathtub opens out to a magnificent view of the sea.

  • Deluxe Water Villas are even more spacious, and feature a luxurious partially open-air bathroom.

Restaurant & Bar

The resort offers accommodation on full board & all inclusive basis only. All meals are served either buffet style or a la Carte, and offer an excellent choice to suit all tastes. Professional kitchen staff prepares the best culinary delights with you in mind. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual both in the Dhonveli Restaurant (main) and the Haruge Bar.

  • Dhonveli Restaurant The Dhonveli restaurant is spacious, open on all sides with bamboo shutters that can be pulled down in the event of the odd squall. Under the palm thatch, the floor is covered with fine white sand so you can dig your feet in as you enjoy your meals. Veligandu is certainly not the resort for you if you are planning to lose some weight during your holidays. The food here is excellent and rated very highly by guests.

A choice of German, English and local breakfast is offered at the full buffet breakfast and a late breakfast is available from 9.30 to 11.00 am at the coffee shop. Lunch is always served buffet style, and dinner is served either buffet style or a la carte, with a wide choice of entrees, soups and desserts and a choice of main courses. These include continental and Asian dishes. The Maldivian buffet, seafood and pasta buffet, Mongolian and western barbecues provide a rich variety to the dinner programme. The Maldivian buffet gives you a unique opportunity to sample the local delights in an environment enhanced by the local costumes worn by the waiters, and followed by the evening’s entertainment when you get to sample the local music and dance. The seafood and pasta night features handmade genuine Italian style pasta.

Once a week dinner buffet is held outside on the wooden deck right outside the restaurant overlooking the lagoon. Each outside dinner is a special event, in a romantic atmosphere under the stars and the coconut palms providing many moments for the memories.

Vegetarian meals are provided on request. You will just need to inform the reception upon arrival at the resort.

  • The Haruge Bar & Coffee Shop A spacious bar with a high thatched roof and comfortable seating, can offer you a wide range of refreshing drinks. You can enjoy your selection either inside the bar, with your feet in the sand, or outside on the spacious wooden deck on the beach. Coconut palms sway gently to the rhythm of the soft breeze as you sip your favourite cocktail.

If you feel like it you may enjoy a small afternoon snack here. Snacks, including sandwiches, cakes and pizzas are available through out the day. The coffee shop snacks service is available only in the afternoons. Choose one of the many varieties of ice creams, offered here, to quench your thirst after a swim.

A games area next to the bar offers a variety of board games and a television so you can switch on your favourite satellite channel. A tradition ‘udholi’ - a grand swing on which two can sit comfortably hangs outside just next to the bar. Beyond the end of the bar is the massive sandbank, from which the resort’s name is derived. If you are feeling romantic you may walk out on to the sandbank and sip your drinks under the stars.

Sports & Activities

Your holiday at Veligandu may be one of relaxation mixed with fun and activity. The choice is yours. Veligandu offers a variety of non-motorized water sports, a selection of land sports, in addition to the several dive courses, snorkeling and fishing and sightseeing excursions.

A variety of excursions are on offer at Veligandu. These offer you the chance to venture out for a change of scenery. There are several resorts that can be visited, or you can catch a glimpse of the daily life of Maldivians in one of the fishing villages. For those who wish to test their skills at fishing a variety of fishing expeditions are organized.

Excursions are organized on a weekly or twice-weekly basis. However these are subject to weather conditions and a minimum level of participation by the guests.

  • Water Sport The Veligandu water sports centre on the island offers windsurfing and catamaran sailing, Canoe and Hydro Biking. As courses under the supervision of experienced instructors are not available, windsurfing or catamaran sailing is for experienced surfers and sailors only. Check out your skill and test the wind and the waters on the excellent equipment on offer.
  • Land Sport Beach volleyball and badminton are some of the options available for an afternoon of fun and enjoyment. Often mixed teams of guests and staff join in and provide an exciting afternoon for the players as well as the onlookers. Or enjoy a more relaxing game of table tennis any time you feel like it.
  • Thoddoo A remote island 11 kms to the north of Veligandu Thoddoo is in a tiny atoll of its own measuring only two kilometres in diameter. Veligandu offers a half-day, weekly excursion to this fertile island covered with thick vegetation. Here you can see at close quarters, the daily life in a typical fishing village. The people of Thoddoo also grow a few crops, and the island is also famous for its watermelons and vegetables. Come and meet the friendly and hospitable people. Several other mounds still exist and remain to be excavated. It is important to wear modest clothing for this excursion.
  • Island Hopping This full day excursion takes you around to three very different islands. Beginning in the morning after breakfast, the first stop gives you the chance to snorkel in total privacy in the lagoon of ‘Madivaru’, a desert island. A barbecue lunch is provided on the beach, and then you are off to one of the island of Rasdhoo. With a population of about 800 people, Rasdhoo is an old inhabited island with archeological evidence of a Buddhist past. The last stop for the day is at Kuramathi, a resort island occupied by three different resorts. Wander round and take this unique opportunity to sample the atmosphere at other island paradis
  • Rasdhoo Rasdhoo, the capital island of North Ari Atoll has a population of 800. This half-day excursion provides you with an opportunity to meet some of them, and sample the Maldivian way of life. Take some time to stroll around the shady village streets, and take a look at the architecture - this is the real Maldivian style. And before you leave pop into one of the souvenir shops and see if you can find anything to bring back with you.
  • Snorkelling Safari The resort’s excellent house reef lies 150 metres from the beach, but at Veligandu they’ve thought of everything, and the long jetty provides you with easy access by leading you right over the reef’s edge. However you may wish to see more of the underwater wonders that Maldives has to offer. With this in mind the resort organizes a snorkelling excursion once a week. This excursion takes you to two or three different reefs from amongst the many dotted around the resort. A half-day trip, which departs in the morning after breakfast, this excursion could bring you some surprises. Mantas and other pelagics often frequent these reefs.
  • Night Fishing This is a very different type of fishing, even for the seasoned fisherman. A chance to relax and ponder as you sit in the boat under the stars, waiting for the next big one to bite. Setting off at five in the evening the boat anchors at a reef just in time for you to enjoy a magnificent sunset. The crew prepares your lines with bait, hook and sinkers. You drop your line until it almost touches the bottom. Peace and quite sets in the boat and you can relax in the boat as you wait, holding your line, feeling the fish pecking at the bait. Soft murmuring can be heard, as people start discussing their day’s activities. Darkness sets in and millions of twinkling stars appear above. Suddenly someone has a bite, and there is excitement on the boat as everyone looks on to see what you are pulling in. A Snapper?  A Grouper?

After returning a special barbecue is held on the open-air deck next to the restaurant and you can find out for yourself just see how tasty fish can be if you have caught it yourself.

  • Big Game Fishing Big game fishing is organised on request. A dhoni - the traditional fishing boat - is made available for two or three hours, along with lines and rods that may be rented. You never know your luck, a few runs along the outer reef of the atoll, and you may be able to haul in the biggest catch in your life. Wahoo, sailfish, jacks and mako are some of the more likely catches that you may make.
  • Weekly Disco Night The resort’s DJ spins the current favourite disco tunes once a week for you to take a break away from all that lazy relaxation. Now is your chance to get up and move around. The disco floor, located in the Main Bar at the end, facing the long sandbank offers an environment of romance as you dance the night away. If you feel too warm you can always step out on to the beach to cool down.
  • Boduberu Evening Boduberu - for those not in the know, is the local music and dance, and a special show is put on once a week by the resort staff on the Maldivian Night. This is performed by men and is a combination of rhythmic drums and singing. You will find yourselves joining in the clapping or the chorus, if you are able to follow the words. The more adventurous will surely be tempted to join in the dancing too.
