Palace Museum, Kerala being the largest ethno- archaeological museum
and the first heritage museum of Kerala is one of the most famous
tourist attractions of Thripunithura in Ernakulam district of Kerala
Built in 1865 and spreading over 52
acres of beautifully landscaped hilltop with 49 buildings designed in
the traditional architectural style of Kerala ,a deer park, gardens,
fountains, ponds and facilities for horse riding, the Hill Palace
Museum, Kerala was originally a residing palace for the famous royal
family of Kochi
Later in 1980, the palace was taken
over by the Department Of Archaeology, who converted it into a museum
and opened it for the public in 1986. A botanical garden displaying
numerous species of flora including rare medicinal plants, exotic
tropical trees from Central America to Australia are maintained on the
museum premise
The Hill Palace Museum, Kerala in
different galleries exhibits mainly 14 categories of items, which
include oil-paintings, murals, sculptures in stone and plaster of
Paris, manuscripts, inscriptions, carvings, valuable coins, ornaments,
gold crown decorated with precious stones, majestic beds, samples of
epigraphy and royal furniture including the simhasana (throne) mainly
belonging to the Kochi royal family, Paliam Devaswom and the
department of Archaeology
Apart from these, this ethno-
archaeological museum also exhibits 200 antique pieces of pottery and
ceramic vases from China and Japan, Kudakkallu (tomb stone),
Thoppikkallu (hood stone), menhirs, granite, laterite memorials, rock
cut weapons of stone age, wooden temple models, plaster cast models of
objects from Mohanjodaro and Harappa of the Indus Valley Civilization.
Besides, the museum also has a gallery displaying items from the
contemporary period.
Within the museum, the Department of
Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Kerala has set up a Centre for Heritage
Studies (CHS), which offers post-graduate diploma courses and
short-term certificate courses in Archaeology, Museology, Conservation
and Archival Studies

How to Reach
Air: International Air Port is at Nedumbassery, near Aluva, about 22
kms away from Ernakulam, Kochi.
Rail: The nearest station is at Ernakulam about 12km from
Thripunithura.
Road: KSRTC Central Bus station is near the Ernakulam Junction
railway station.
