The warmth and easy-going nature of your hosts make this solid, modest guest house hard to leave. The owners will regale you with tales of guests who have become family friends; perhaps you, too, will be lucky enough to return. The old house has been in the family for years; deodars, or cedars, surround it and the crisp mountain air is redolent with the scent of conifers. There’s a wonderful stone veranda for alfresco meals – English breakfasts, Indian lunches, continental dinners – and a swing seat from which you can gaze on a clear day on the snow-covered heights of Nanda Devi and Trisul. More spots for contemplation in the lovely garden, and a small shrubbery with gnomes. Big bedrooms have high ceilings and fireplaces, stripes and flowery chintz; one has a private porch, another a bathroom with a big tub. The old-fashioned mood continues with knick-knacks and plastic flowers, tiger skins in the hall, books and games to keep children happy; the sitting room is super-cosy at night. Almora is a short drive or a long walk.
