'BNR' stands for 'The Bengal Nagpur
Railway Company ,Limited'-a British owned company established in 1887
under the supervision and with the support of the Secretary of State for
India .It had its Indian headquarter at 11,Garden Reach Road ,Calcutta
with the Board of Directors at 47, Gresham Street,EC.2,London.
After the highly venerated and ancient
Jagannath Temple at Puri(dating back to the 12th century A.D.), perhaps
the hoariest of institutions at Puri is the Hotel still fondly called 'B.N.R.Hotel'
nearly forty three years after the Company's name was changed to 'South
Eastern Railway' after its nationalisation in 1955.
Inside the Hotel, you can shower and
head for the dining room, a lovely, Cape-Cod style room overlooking the
hotel garden. Fresh flowers adorn the crisp, linen table cloths, while
turbaned waiters serve you meals in old style on fine crockery.Lazing
and eating-lots of it- is the principle activity at the 'BNR' A typical
breakfast consists of juice, porridge, eggs, liver, potatoes, toast,
jams, marmalade, tropical seasonal fruits and coffee or tea. At lunch and
dinner, there are western style gourmet meals with seasonal
Indo-continental pota'ge,fresh seafood ,exotic fowl dishes like the one
named after the German princess Demidoff , and other courses including
epicurean souffles .The Hotel also has an English-style billiards room.
If you are alone, ask one of the waiters to play with you. The elderly
turbaned waiter can give you a real good game. Other comforts of the
guest are also taken care of.
