Kaziranga National
Park
Kaziranga, a World
Heritage site,(declared by UNESCO in 1985) which is also the first and
the oldest National Park in Assam situated in the Golaghat District.
Spread over an area of 430
sq. kms, it is the natural home of the one-horned Indian rhinoceros (unicornis).(
As per census of 2006 total number of rhinos is 1855) In 2006 Kaziranga
was declared as a Tiger Reserve. The landscape of Kaziranga is of sheer
forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, mellow marshes, and shallow
pools. You will get the feel of real wildlife adventure with the
Elephant and Jeep Safari inside the park.
Kaziranga has a
history of its own. Lady Curzon first heard about the Rhinos of
Kaziranga from her British tea planter friends and came to Assam in
1904-05. Although she could not see the animal, she spotted hoof prints
with three toes and believed that such an animal did exist.
