Z
Hotel, at Puri, Orissa, on the east coast of India, is situated on the
beach side of town on Chacrateertha road. Puri is 62 kms from
Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa and the nearest airport. Indian
Airlines and Jet Airways connect Bhubaneswar to Delhi (daily), Calcutta
and Bombay on certain days of the week. Also connected, but not daily,
are Bangalore and Madras.The
building of Z Hotel was earlier known as "Amulya Bhavan" It used to
belong to the King (Raja) of Serampore, now a part of West Bengal. The
ground floor was built in 1917 and the 1st floor subsequently. Designed
by one Mr A. Paul, a Britisher, Amulya Bhavan was built according to
Vaastu (the ancient and natural Indian construction science) and still
retains the same frame.
Of a total of 16 rooms, there are now
12 let-able ones. Of the remaining 04, one is a kitchen, another the
main store, a Women's dorm and the fourth a TV/recreation room.
The Z caters to mostly budget
international and Indian travelers. Tariff varies from Rs500 for large
and Rs300 for medium sized twin bedded rooms. There are two single
bedrooms for Rs150 a night. The large rooms have attached bath and the
ones on the 1st floor have balconies. The smaller twin rooms have shared
toilets. Every room has sea view and is airy, spacious and well lit.
Built on a large plot of land, nearly
an acre in size, the Z has a lot of free space around it for parking. It
is ideal for having small and private parties/cocktails, bar-b-que and
receptions.
Special cultural programs like Orissi dance/music, rock 'n roll (live or
recorded) concerts and such entertainment could be organized by the
Manager, provided timely notice is given.
Ricksha pullers and auto ricksha
drivers usually do not encourage guests to check out the Z, claiming it
is either fully booked or it is a 'No Indians" hotel. The reason for
this is the Management does not give commission to these transporters.
You may well have to insist to come to the Z. Once there, you will not
be disappointed. That's for sure.
