The fort and the village of Auwa stand
proud in the Godwad area of Marwar heralding a history over 1000 years
old. The fort and eighty villages and town belonged to the Champawat
Clan, the premier nobles of the Jodhpur kingdom. The Champawat family
still resides in the Fort. Numerous battles and wars were fought by the
Auwa cheiftains against the Mughals, Marathas, French and lastly the
British.
In the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the Fort of
Auwa was laid siege to by the British Army for 6 months and countless
battles took place including the death of Captain Mason whose cenotaph
stands where he fell in battle.
The fort & village still carry the scars
of that siege
Auwa village and Fort was re-reconstructed
once again with the great determination of the people and the Thakur of
Auwa. Presently the fort houses a beautiful constructed traditional home
of the Thakurs of Auwa.
Fortress Hotels & Resorts Pvt. Ltd. has
re-constructed the Fort to offer quiet luxury of a retreat in an
aesthetically converted resort. The architecture of the fort is an
eccentric mix of pre-Mughal traditional Hindu sculpture with
Neo-Colonial, Indo-Saracenic style. It is liberally sprinkled with
courtyards, terraces and beautiful temples. The rooms and suites have
been designed preserving the rich cultural and architectural heritage of
the fort, namely the Kamdar Dera, Pratap Bhawan, Ganesh Sal, Sri
Krishankunj and Dhruv Pol.
