In the year 1241AD, Rao Deva subjugated
Jeta Meena and annexed the territory of Bundi. His valiant descendants
won over the areas beyond river Chambal ans shifted their capital to
Bundi, thereby laying down the foundation of a prosperous Hada state.
Bundi district has some of the finest and well-preserved shelters of
prehistoric man and his cave paintings. The forts and palaces of Bundi
are fine examples of Rajput architecture. Bundi was also called, mini
Kashi, a holy Hindu place, because of its temples and places of
worship. The kunds, baories, cenotaphs and hunting lodges of Bundi are
worth seeing. The wildlife abounds in Ramgarh-Vishdhari Sanctuary and
many wetlands of the district.

Nawal Sagar or Navlakha

Rani Ji ki Baori :
17th century Bundi ia a city of Baoris and Kunds (stepwells) which
were constructed by the Kings, Queens and the affluent members of the
society. The commissioning of a baori was privilege, so whoever could
afford the cost got them constructed for their utilatarian value and
aesthetics, More then 50 baories and Kunds exists in and around Bundi
and are a marvel of craftmanship and
architecture. Some of them are a Must see for the tourists. Built in
the year 1699 A.D. by mother-queen nathavati ji during her son Budh
Singh's time it is adorned with finely sculpted pillars and arches. It
is a multistoreyed structure with places of worship on each floor.

Kshar Bagh :
16th Century (Mausoleum) onwards
Nestled between the hills and streams, this final resting place of the
Royalty has artistically sculpted cenotaphs of the Kings and Queens of
Bundi. The Cenotaphs are sculpted from fine yellow sandstone and
marble. The oldest cenotaph is of Duda (1540 A.D.) and the most
artistic is of MahaRao Raja Vishnu Singh (1822 A.D.)

Phool Sagar : 17th
century The Queen of RaoRaja Bhoja, Phool Lata got an artificial
Lake constructed in a secluded place between two hills. A stepwell and
living quarters were added later. Now a modern palace with all its
additions stands a little ahead of the lake and it is a personal
property of the descendents of the royal family. Prior permission has
to be sought to visit the complex. Still a visit to the Phool Sagar is
worth taking for sheer natural beauty and quiet.

Taragarh Fort
: 14th Century
It is one of the most impressive forts in Rajasthan atop a 430 m. high
hill. It has four enormous tanks to cater to the water requirement of
the fort. Observe the fort architecture, its invincible ramparts and
its inaccesibility. The panoramic view of Bundi from the top is a
delightful experience.

The Garh
Palace : 17th Century
Built during the reigns of different
kings, Chhatra Mahal, Badal Mahal, Phool Mahal and Aniruddha Mahal
form the parts of the palace complex. Do not forget to visit the
famous Chitrashala with its murals and frescoes dipicting Hindu
mythology, Rajput grandeur, Royal beauties and wildlife.

Sukh Mahal :
19th Century
This
summer palace where Rudyard Kipling stayed when he visited Bundi in
late 19th Century. This magnificient palace was constructed during the
reign of Rao Raja Vishnu Singh. It is said that an underground tunnel
runs from Sukh Mahal to Taragarh Fort.

Jait Singh : 18th
Century
Construction of water storage tanks, ponds and lakes was considered a
divine duty of the rulers. Jait Sagar, named after Jeta Meena was
commissioned by his rule. Surrounded by lush green hills it offers a
serene recluse to a harried city dweller. RaoRaja Surjan's mother
Gehlotni Jayvanti got the earthen dam repaired and masonary work was
done. Later MahaRao Raja Vishnu SIngh (1830-1878) built a palace of
comfort with formal gardens.

Eighty Four
Pillared : 17th Century
Built by Deva Gujar during the reign of RaoRaja Anirudddha Singh
(1676-1696) to worship Lord Shiva, the God of creation as well as
destruction. The two storeyed structure is on high elevation and it
has 84 pillars in all. The ceiling has artistically carved figurines
of dancers and musicians. The cenotaph has a 16 pillared peeled orange
shaped dome and four-4 pillared smaller domes.

Chitrashala
: A
beautiful pavilion and gallery of fascinating murals in the miniature
style. The walls are adorned with elaborate painting depicting scenes
from the Ragmala and Raslila, the Radha-Krishna legends. The colour
scheme of all these paintings is blue, green, turquoise on white with
touches of terracotta or yellow. Bundi Wall paintings are famous all
over the world.

Ramgarh
: Wildlife
sanctuary lies in the southeastern portion of Rajasthan between 24.59"
& 25.53" north latitude and 75 19'.30" to 76 49.30" east longitude.
The approximate stretch of the area is 10 Km and 50 Km in north to
east and east to west respectively.
