Anakkara lies on the famed Spice Circuit. It is especially known for cardamom, vanilla and pepper cultivation. It also possesses an international quality of sericulture and rose cultivation, apart from scenic tourist spots in a calm, salubrious environment, astride the Western Ghats. Anakkara circuit extensions cover the well known ecosystem of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, 18 km away. The Reserve has many species of rare orchids, medicinal plants and an enduring gene pool consisting of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and butterflies. There are boat rides for viewing, besides nature walks, a tiger trail, border hiking, bamboo rafting, night jungle patrol, tribal heritage and bullock cart discoveries. The forest shrine of Ayyappa at Sabrimala lying to the west of the Reserve, receives nearly 5 million visitors annually.
