Nepura
village is 12 km from Rajgir on the Buddhist circuit in Bihar. Rajgir
has renowned Jain and Buddhist sites. Nepura itself is in the vicinity
of the ancient Nalanda University. As recorded in the Pali commentary,
these environs of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihar weres surrounded by
three big mango groves. Buddha, during his visit to Nalanda, stayed at
one of these mango groves. Even before it became a seat of learning, the
place was the epicentre of the first major social reform movement. Lord
Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Sanjaya and many other preachers had thousands of
disciples and followers from the hinterland. Lord Buddha and Lord
Mahavira spent many rainy seasons here, and gave important discourses
Right next to Nepura, Nalanda and Rajgir
are in the heart of “Footsteps of Lord Buddha” circuit. One can see
ancient remains of Gupta and pala art and architecture in villages of
this part of Buddhist circuit. “Maghi” the dialect of the area is the
direct descendant of “Prakrit” the dialect, in which Lord Buddha gave
his discourses. Sariputta, Mahamogallan and Mahakassapa Three important
disciples of Lord Buddha were from adjoining villages of Nepura. Ancient
Nalanda University has produced great teachers like Nagarjuna and
Padmasambhava. Ven. Xuanzang spent 6 years at The Nalanda Mahavihar. The
village is known for its history of silk weaving. Besides getting
hands-on experience in silk weaving, tourists can also get a view of
rural life in Bihar including cattle herding.The key attractions around
Neupra are Nalanda Ruins and Museum, Xuanzang Memorial Museum, Swetambar
Jain temple, Digambar jain temple, Sun Temple , Bargaon, Thai Temple,
Rajgir, Shanti stupa (Aerial ropeway), Maniyar Matth, Sone Bhandar,
Bimbisara Jail, Rana-bhumi and Chariot marks, Gridhrakuta, Venuwan,
Brahma Kund (Hot springs), Saptaparni cave, New fort, Cyclopean wall,
Veerayatan, Jivaka's mango garden, Gurudwara shree Guru Nanak Sheetal
Kund, Makhdum Kund, Jain temples on Vaibhara, Vipula, Ratna, Chhatha,
Saila, Udaya and Sona Hills. Other jain temples in Rajgir are the
Ajaatsatru stupa, Ashok stupa and many other stupas, Japanese temple,
Pawapuri, Jal Mandir, Samosaran and Gauv Mandir
Art & Craft Nepura is locally
popular for Tussar Silk weaving. Pit loom tussar weaving and thigh
reeling are the major craft techniques, which are traditionally
practiced by the Tati community. The primary raw material used therein
is the Tussar cocoon. Nepura has all elements of a rural economic unit.
The weavers produce a myriad designs of fine fabric, tailored by trained
women. This, together with sericulture and silk processing, can be an
engaging experience for the visitor
Local Culture Backed by the oral
tradition of Jain and Buddhist history through folk theatre, local
performances will reveal the cultural fabric of the locale. Cuisine:
Rice and pulses, accompanied by an array of vegetables and pickles,
is the staple food of this region. Fairs and festivals: Chath is
a popular festival which is celebrated twice a year (Oct and March).
This is Six days festival where the Sun God is worshipped. It starts on
the 1st day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik and Chaitya months of the Hindu
calendar. Another important festival which draws lakhs of pilgrims at
Rajgir is the Malmas. This is celebrated every 4th year
