Pipili
is synonymous with applique, the stitching of colourful cloth pieces on
a fabric base. The result is bright decorative motifs of gods and
goddesses, animals and stories from the epics. Said to be named after a
Muslim saint Pir Palli, Pipili falls on Orissa's Golden Triangle
connecting the state capital Bhubaneswar (20 km) and Puri (40 km) with
the Konark Sun Temple World Heritage Site (50 km), extended to the
Chilika Lake (90 km). Pipili is thus the gateway to these attractions of
coastal OrissaThe main
attarction of Pipli is the women artisan folk making the colourful
appliques in groups at the common worksheds. Pipli is a unique example
of both Muslim and Hindus coexisting with a passion for applique work.
There
are temples as well as mousques. The main street of Pipli with decorated
applique shops are the main attraction during tourist season in November
and December. Behind the main street, the ar4tisan families stay in
typical rural settings.Pipli is a pocket of around 20,000 population
mostly depending on applique craft as the means of livelihood. It serves
as the centre of saling, exporting of applique items from Orissa. Both
Hindus and Muslims participate in the trade. The main apects of tourist
attraction are 1. The Handicraft. 2. The women participation in craft.
3. Rural lifestyle. 4. Communal harmony etc
Art & Craft Applique is the main
craft of Pipli which has been modernised now a days, bringing the
utility aspect of the society. Most of the hand stiching is done by the
rural women, while the finishinh and machine stiching is dominated by
men. Traditionally the motiffs of God, Godess, animals, and nature ets
featured in the craft, where as modern life style, cities, disasters and
other contemporary themes are being featured in the craft. The artisans
follow the process of cutting, stiching and decorating the coloured
cloths in to colourful items of use like, bags, umbrellas, wall
hangings, purses etc
Local
Culture A mixed Hindu and Muslim culture. Festivals of both the
religion are observed peacefully. Rather both the communities
participate in all the festivals. Rath yatra, Dussehra, Id, Urs etc are
observed with enthusiasm.
How to Reach
By Road: One has to take a Bus or taxi from Bhubaneswar( 20 km) the
state capital well connected by Rail and Air. Pipli is situated in the
middle of the tourist sites on the coastal Orissa. One can visit famous
Sun temple at Konark( 50 km), Jagannath Temple at Puri(40 km), famous
wetland bird sanctuary at Chilka Lake(90 km). To visit all these
locations, Pipli is the gateway. |
