Welcome to the Web-home of People Tree
– the tree that grew into a shop. In New Delhi. In India. A shop
that is not just a shop, but also a great place to be at. It's a meeting
ground – and of course, breeding ground too – of art, commerce and
madness. People come to this tree from everywhere. To share. To buy and
sell. To laugh, draw, search, read, speak out, locate, relocate.
Now on the Web, some of the best and
maddest People Tree T-shirts, artworks, crafts and books come
spiralling out of labyrinthine databases to assemble here, waiting to
meet their human counterparts... Perhaps you are one of them?
Shop -
Back in 1991, People Tree started life as
a design studio-cum- shop in New Delhi . The products featured on this
site are current examples of the kind of things we have been designing
and trading for over a decade.
Wherever possible, we use natural,
non-toxic and bio-degradable materials. We are committed to the
promotion of hand skills, self-expression and quality workmanship.
Here, rich and meditative arts
traditions collide with shiny plastic instant cheapness. Ochre and
madder jostle with fluorescent pink.
Some things die, and sometimes we weep.
Sometimes we pick up the pieces and join them in new ways.
Browse through these inventive and
irreverent examples of urban-folk, industrial-pop design. We create
alternatives to globalised monopolies and branded "hipness", working
with the exciting cross-currents of the contemporary South Asian milieu
Handicraft Product - The
products featured on this site are current examples of the kind of
things we have been designing and trading for over a decade. Wherever
possible, we use natural, non-toxic and bio-degradable materials. We are
committed to the promotion of hand skills, self-expression and quality
workmanship. At the same time we strive to ensure higher wages and
better conditions for every worker directly or indirectly associated
with our products. As a result, every single product we sell is made
with skill, care and sensitivity by people who love what they do, and
are very good at it!
As these products are hand-crafted, not produced by mass-production
machines, each piece is individual and unique. We cannot ensure complete
uniformity across a batch – on the contrary, we revel in the differences
that exist from piece to piece.
Natural materials help ensure the sustainability and
environment-friendliness of our production processes, but also mean that
special care needs to be taken with the finished products.
The
Alternative Bookshop -
Often people ask us if we publish books,
as such people tree has never published any books. Some of us have
illustrated them, even written parts of them. But we read books, are
inspired by them to create visual images, they expand and deepen our
knowledge about all the wonderful, diverse, parallel thinking that's
going on in the world.
It was due to our search for the many voices we needed to fuel our
energies that we turned to books. At first the books we were reading,
lay around us at 8-regal building. Then, when some one would want us to
substantiate the 'gut' theories on our t-shirts we decided we'd like to
be able to show them where the ideas came from.
And so we went looking for written matter…and got to know a whole lot
of people. Other India Press, Third World Network, Bharat Dogra ....
Kalpavriksh.
Paper
Boat - At Paper Boat we
solicit contributions from you in the form of articles, stories, poetry,
photos, artworks, comix and cartoons, announcements, etc.
Unfortunately, due to various reasons, we haven't been able to activate
this part of the website much as we would like to. Though, the amazing
thing is that regardless of
this people have been contributing stuff regularly.
This
is very inspiring and has sometimes led to some great collaborations
like, for instance,
a t-shirt design which evolved with the participation of 2 young women
who contacted
the website. So, we really would like to keep receiving the wonderful
poems, articles,
plays, art works, photographs and other creative inputs that have been
coming in.
Hopefully they'll lead to some more collaborations in the future. …and
one day soon
we will put them up on this section of the website.
Tree People -
In New Delhi's old and famous Connaught
Circle, during the early summer of 1990, a small group of designers,
artists and friends managed – with the help of a few fortunate
coincidences – to set up a studio-shop which was remarkably free from
the impositions and demands of (heartless) markets and (artless)
clients.
The ideas and experimentations that
followed were the seed that grew to become the 'People Tree'. Today, all
of us at People Tree take pride in our reputation as a small independent
business which combines a sense of social purpose and ecological
responsibility with the spirit of collective creativity. This has been
the vision which has guided our work as a design, production and retail
centre.
People Tree Studio -
There are some
people who dare to be 'different'. Who inhabit a parallel
universe. Live life on their own terms. Create their own unique forms of
expression. These are the people who's work we present on these
pages.The People Tree STUDIO.
