Designed by Sri
Lanka's most famous architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa, this
private house, set in five acres of landscaped coconut
plantation, occupies a spectacular position overlooking a bay.
With just three spacious rooms, it is ideal for those seeking
seclusion and relaxation on the unspoilt south coast.
Location
Claughton House
is a three-bedroom villa, located on the southern tip of Sri
Lanka between the southern fishing town of Matara and Tangalle.
It is approximately five hours drive from Colombo.
Facilities
There is an open
plan spilt-level lounge and dining area designed to catch the
cool sea breeze. Other than the dining-service offered here,
you can also take a pleasant walk through the grounds of the
property to Nugaya, an affiliated restaurant offering a range
of Sri Lankan dishes, international cuisine and barbeques.
Both the house and the restaurant are blessed with acres of
space and in between the two there is a gate giving private
access to a neat little stretch of beach that curves around
towards Nilwella Bay. An attractive freshwater swimming pool
is cleverly built into the rocks above the beach.
Excursions
Boat can be
organised for exploring the local bays with fishing and scuba
diving available on request. Claughton House serves as an
excellent base for exploring the surrounding seas, inland,
wild life, as well as the southern cultural heritage. The
surrounding bays & beaches in Weligama, Mirissa, and Tangalle
offer a perfect environment for swimming and snorkelling along
the coral reefs. For the more adventurous, a jeep safari to
the Yala wildlife park with 400 sq. miles of jungle with herds
of elephants, sloth bear, deer, wild boar, monkeys,
crocodiles, and a variety of bird species, is an interesting
day's excursion.
Accommodation
There is one
master double room and two twins. All three rooms have private
bathrooms, two of which have open-air showers. Only the master
bedroom has a/c.
