This Dutch
colonial building was once the home of an American artist, Douglas
Johnson, and was renovated with the help of the celebrated former
Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Dark colonial furniture is
lightened by modern decor, unusual ornaments and Johnson's
pictures.
Location
The Beach
House is an idyllic villa situated in private gardens, with direct
access to its own stretch of gleaming white sand near the small
southern fishing village of Tangalle, around five-and-a-half hours
from Colombo. This is a secluded part of the Sri Lankan coast,
studded with beautiful coves and a small selection of high-class
villa properties. Conde Nast Traveller magazine once nominated The
Beach House in its list of the world's 20 finest beach villas.
Facilities
An enclosed
sitting room leads onto the front terrace with blissfully
comfortable lounging seats looking over across the Indian Ocean.
Shaded by palm trees this large swimming pool remains invitingly
cool all day. A fully equipped kitchen and a full time staff of
four will ensure you are pampered and left to drift away into your
own personal sanctuary. Meals are generally eaten on the dining
terrace to the crash of ocean waves.
Excursions
Tangalle and
the surrounding areas are renowned for its superb unspoiled and
undeveloped beaches but there are other attractions nearby,
including Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in
the island where elephant and leopard can be seen, a short
90-minute drive away. Sinharaja Rainforest, a magnificent strip of
virgin rainforest now protected by UNESCO, also provides for a
rewarding day out.
Accommodation
The Beach
House has four doubles and one twin room. One bedroom is housed in
its own garden cottage. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with
h/w showers, washbasin, and w/c. Rooms have four-poster beds with
mosquito nets, tiled floors, and large windows with security
grills.
