The Colony has a
tranquil feel that is instantly inviting. It is elegantly
furnished with antiques, paintings and a gentle infusion of
colour. The beach directly below the Colony offers safe
swimming during peak season only (Dec-March). But just four
kms away is the more placid Seenimodara (Sugar Bay), one of
the finest crescent-shaped beaches in the island. The owners
of The Colony have a ten-acre estate leading off this beach,
which guests are welcome to use as a base for swimming and
relaxation.
Location
The Colony is a
renovated colonial beach house perched above the Indian Ocean
to the west of Tangalle, one of the most picturesque sections
of the south coast. Tangalle is about two hours beyond the
historic city of Galle and is an ideal base to explore the
south’s beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife and fascinating
heritage. The journey from Katunayake Airport will take about
six hours, traffic permitting. You may also consider taking
the Air Taxi which lands in Dickwella, just 20 minutes drive
from the villa.
Facilities
The Colony’s
living and dining areas are cozy and informal. The terrace has
spectacular sea views. An infinity swimming pool has wonderful
views across the bay. Western and Eastern meals are prepared
with fresh market produce. There is a well stocked bar and any
one passing through must try the famous house cocktail, the
Colony Arrack Sour.
Excursions
The south coast
offers an attractive mix of beaches, history, wildlife and
adventure. The beaches are secluded, long and unspoiled by
overdevelopment. An extensive coral reef along the coast, has
given rise to several bays, which are ideal for swimming and
snorkelling. Surfers will like the beaches around Ahangama and
Midigama. Closer to Matara, you could explore Polhena and
Talalla, a gorgeous crescent-shaped bay. Just 4 kms away from
Tangalle is Seenimodara, one of south coast’s best beaches and
home to Ernest, a private 10 acre estate where guests from
Colony are welcome to spend the day swimming and relaxing. For
wildlife enthusiasts, there is the Yala National Park, home to
many species of animals including the elusive Leopard.
Bundala’s wetlands, which combines 20km of beach, lagoons and
scrub jungle hosts more than 150 bird species. Many species of
the endangered Marine Turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka
especially along the south coast. Their breeding habits can be
observed in the fishing village of Rakuwa, where effective
efforts at Marine Turtle conservation are taking place.
