Chennai  Full Day Tour

Tour Description:

Marina Beach View 1 Goverment Museum Chennai : The proposal for a museum in Madras was mooted by the Madras Literary Society in 1846 AD and Sir Henry Pottinger, the then Governor, obtained the sanction of the Court of Directors of the East India Company in London.
In January 1851 AD, Dr. Edward Balfour, Medical Officer of the Governor's Body guard was appointed as the First Officer in charge of the Government Museum. The notification in the Fort St. George Gazetteer dated 29th April 1851 AD contained the first announcement regarding the opening of the Madras Government Museum. The Government Museum otherwise called as the Central Museum was started in the College of Fort St. George, in the premises of the present office of the Director of Public Instruction, on College Road. The college had been established in 1812 AD and made a significant contribution to the development of South Indian Languages. The Museum was started in the first floor of the college with the 1100 geological specimens of the Madras Literary Society. It steadily developed and expanded under the guidance and supervision of a succession of directors.

Fort Museum Chennai : The Fort St. George Museum was organised and opened to the public from 31st January 1948. The museum began with a small collection of objects of the British Raj donated by the then Madras Presidency Government, the St. Mary's Church authorities, the disbanded army units and others. Over the years many objects were acquired by various means and there are now 3661 registered antiquities in the collection. Best among them (602) are on display in ten galleries.

The building housing the museum is one of the oldest surviving buildings built within the fort. The building was completed in 1795 and served as the location for Madras Bank. The museum building has a history of its own.

Ripon Building : Ripon Building homes the popular municipal complex that lies to the West of Central Station in the city suburbs. The building was founded in the year 1909 by Sir Gilbert John Elliot M.K.M Bart and Carl Minto who happened to be the Viceroy and Governer General of India at that time. The building has been named after Lord Ripon, who made great contributions regarding local self government. In the year 1913 the municipal corporation of Madras started functioning from the Ripon Building. The Ripon Building houses Nehru Stadium, Victoria Public Hall, Moore Market and a number of parks and gardens. The complex is a medley of Gothic, Ionic and Corinthian architectural styles. The construction of the complex was undertaken by four engineers and all of them were expatriates. The wall have been constructed from brick and the cementing agent used is primarily lime mortar. The ground floor is laid with marble and the cieling above stands as high as 5.6 metres. The foundation too stands to about 5.3 metres. Some 20 metres from the terrace is the popular West Minister Quarter Chiming Clock that was installed in 1913 by famous company Oakes and Co.

Highcourt Building : High Court was established on June 26, 1892 underMarina Beach View 2 the guidance of the famed architect Henry Irwin, this red Indo-Saracenic structure at Parry’s corner is Chennai’s main landmark. It is believed to be one of the second largest judicial buildings in the world. This complex houses the High Court, the small Cause’s Court and the City Civil Court. It is considered to be one of the three High Courts of india. It is time-honored at Presidency Towns by Letters Patent granted by Queen Victoria. The authority of Chennai High Court extends to Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Marina Beach : The 13-kilometre long Marina Beach forms the city's east coast, from Fort St. George all the way to Mahabalipuram and is one of the longest beaches in the world. The Marina Beach is a sandy beach and is the most sought-after beach for many. A visit to the Marina Beach is an enchanting experience for a traveller.

San Thome Church : There are three places in chennai that stand out as monuments of honour, speaking aloud about the presence, activity and the martyrdom of St. Thomas, the Apostle of india. They are 1. Little Mount, 2. St Thomas Mount, 3. San Thome Cathedral Basilica.

St Thomas built a church at San Thome. After his martyrdom, his body was buried in the Church built by him. A pot containing earth, moistened by his blood and the lance with which he was pierced were both buried in his tomb. The foundation for a new Church was laid on 2nd july 1523. The Church was rebuilt and erected as a Parish. Father Penteado from Portugal was the first Parish Priest. In 1893 His Excellency, Dom Henry Joseph Reed Da Silva, Bishop of Mylapore demolished the old Cathedral and laid the foundation for the new Basilica, to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Day of the Episcopal Consecration of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII. In this church the second tower, asmaller one, points to the exact place where the Apostle was buried. The new Basilica was constructed and consecrated on 1st April 1896 AD. The tip of the cross on the spire is 155 feet from the ground level. In this Church, the statue of our Lady of Mylapore is enthroned, before which St Francis Xavier prayed intensely for several days while he stayed in mylapore.

Kapaleeshwar Temple : The Mylai Kapaleeshwarar Thirukoil, commonly known as the Kapaleeshwar koil is one of the very ancient temples of India. This landmark temple situated near the shores of the sea in Mylapore, Chennai, is thronged by thousands of devotees daily. The primary deities worshipped here are Lord Kapaleeshwarar and goddess Karpagambal.Legend has it that the Kapaleeshwar Koil was first built in 7th century CE by the Pallava rulers, but was later destroyed by the Portuguese. The temple that stands today in all its glory, is the one that was rebuilt by Vijayanagar rulers around 400 years ago, not far away from its original location. People settled around the temple over the years and the area has come to be known as Mylapore, derived from the word Mylai, which means ‘Peacock’ in Tamil. The story goes that Lord Shiva removed one of Brahma’s heads or ‘kapalams’ for being disrespectful. Lord Brahma, out of remorse, came here and installed a ‘Siva Lingam’ to please Lord Shiva and hence the name ‘Kapaleeshwarar’. Another popular belief is that Goddess Karpagambal came here to worship Lord Shiva, for curing a curse that had transformed her into a peacock.

Shopping at Chennai : The shopping list in Chennai could vary from groceries, ready made clothing, to buying of branded items. Jewelry, accessories, chocolates, handicrafts, and metal works. There are several government emporiums and shops where you get authentic South Indian sarees and other outfits. Steel products especially utensils are another important item you can shop from the city. The increase in tourism activities in Tamil Nadu and especially Chennai has influenced the local artisans. You have variety of choice in purchasing silk sarees from Kanchipuram, Mamallapuram, and even those imported from Bangalore.
