Yoga
Yoga is one of the ancient
systems of healing the mind and body that requires
specialised training and discipline.
Through the practice of Yoga, one unites body, mind and
soul. Yoga asanas (postures) keep one's body young, dynamic,
supple, strong and healthy.
Yoga is the divine science that disentangles the jiva (human
consciousness) from the phenomenal world of sense objects
and links him with the anant ananda (infinite bliss).
Yoga originated at around 4th century BC. Yoga and its
sutras were invented and developed by Sage Patanjali during
that era.
Common Yoga is also known as 'Patanjali's Ashtang Yoga' (an
eight-part process).
Rishikesh in the foothills of Uttaranchal is considered the
Yoga capital of the world.
This, incidentally, was also the place where in the 60's the
Beatles met their Guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The Yoga Centres of Rishikesh have enhanced the significance
of the place. International Yoga Week, which attracts
participation form across the world, is held here every year
in February on the banks of Ganga.
Rishikesh for long has been a spiritual centre.
This is the point where the great Ganges leaves behind her
mountain home and enters the vast plains of northern India.
There are many temples and ashrams along the river that
heighten the ambience of the town.
