Getting there:
Nearest airport is Mumbai, 165 kms.
Nearest railhead is
Roha 50 kms.
Murud is 165 km from Mumbai by road, a journey of about 5 hours.
Pune-Murud via Mahad, 230 kms. Alibag-Murud, 52 kms.ST buses operate
from Mumbai Central to Murud's Durbar Road,Pune to Murud.Trains will get
you as far as Roha and Panvel from where you can take a bus to Murud.
But the most convenient way to get here is by ferry from Mazgaon's Ferry
Wharf, to Rewas, 23 km from Murud; or by catamaran from Gateway to
Mandwa.
Sightseeing :
Start by visiting the famous Janjira Fort, said to have been the pride
of the island. This 950 year old sea fort sea is home to many tombs,
towers, water tanks and two sweet water lakes.
To the northwest of
this fort, is Padmadurg, built by the Maratha ruler, Shivaji. It
is yet another sea fort to visit, not as magnificent as Janjira, but
impressive nonetheless.
Visit the 300 years
old Datta Mandir atop a hillock, which is also a great spot to
catch an all encompassing view of the sea. The Janjira caves and
the
Palace of
Nawab are other
sightseeing highlights.
For an enjoyable
picnic, head 4kms from Murud, to see the dam called Carambi Dharan,
or go to Alkapuri 3-4kms away. Visit the Sidhi Vinayak Temple,
dedicated to Lord Ganapati, 8kms away
